To the Ends of the Earth: Character – Week 1, Day 3 - A Cultivator Submits in Humility to God's Call on His Life
Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:1–2
John’s vision of eternity contained a river of life-giving water, pure and sparkling, originating from the throne of God and flowing through the main street of heaven, watering the tree of life. It is an image of everlasting renewal, perfect joy, and eternal peace. His vision is the vision we need to share with those who lack hope, those whose gaze is focused too directly on the here and now. We need to offer others the confident assurance of heaven and all that we will experience in the presence of Christ forever.
As Catholic men, soldiers on a mission through the desert of this broken world, we need to drink deeply from the wellspring of this eternal, living water. This grace should energize how we interact with others as we walk each day’s journey from faith to faith. We need to be men with eternal eyes whose vision of the eternal, ever-flowing stream of Christ’s love spills out into our witness for the Gospel.
Questions for reflection
Do you live day to day knowing that the living water we receive here and now is the living water we will drink forever in heaven? How does that knowledge motivate your service to Christ?
When have you allowed the fading glory of this earthly life to cloud your vision of eternity? How can you fix your eyes more clearly on what lies ahead?
How can you help another man refocus on the hope of life forever in heaven with Jesus?
Praying with Scripture
“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring.” (Is 44:3)
