Letter from Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano on Pope Francis and Illegal Immigration
I have had a devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory for a long time but when my 26 year old son died unexpectedly in 2015 my devotion to them greatly increased. Every day I try to gain as many Indulgences as I can for them and ask them to pray for my prayer intentions. Oftentimes God answers those prayers quickly and obviously so He must be pleased with this pious practice. The following story confirms this!
Mysterious Souls in Purgatory Save Jeweler in a Miraculous Way
Fr. Dolindo, a friend of Saint Padre Pio, once shared a remarkable story his mother told him about a relative who was a jeweler. One night, fearing that his store might be looted, he took one of his most expensive pieces of jewelry and headed home. As he walked, he prayed the Rosary.
From a distance, he saw a group of bad men whom he suspected would rob him. In desperation, he prayed for help from the poor souls in Purgatory, promising to offer Masses and Rosaries for them if they would assist him.
Suddenly, the doors of a nearby church opened, and men dressed in sackcloth, carrying candles, emerged in what appeared to be a procession for the dead. Their faces were covered, with only openings for their eyes. The jeweler quickly joined the procession, blending in with them. The would-be robbers, discouraged and frightened, abandoned their plan to follow him.
When he arrived home, he told his wife about the strange occurrence. To his astonishment, she replied that she had seen him through the window—and he was walking alone. It was impossible for there to have been a procession at that late hour. The jeweler then realized that it was the poor souls in Purgatory who had come to his aid.
Reflection: How the Poor Souls in Purgatory Assist Us
This story is a powerful reminder that the holy souls in Purgatory are not indifferent to our struggles. Though they can no longer pray for themselves, they can intercede for us if we offer prayers, sacrifices, and Masses for their purification. In return, they help us in ways that may seem miraculous, protecting us from danger, guiding us in difficult times, and drawing us closer to God.
By praying for the souls in Purgatory, we not only assist them in reaching Heaven but also gain their gratitude and intercession. As St. John Vianney said, "If only we knew the power of their intercession, we would never neglect to pray for them." Let us, then, remember them daily in our prayers, trusting that they, too, will help us in our hour of need.
Here is a novena that I regularly pray for their intercession:
O Holy Souls in Purgatory, you are the certain heirs of heaven. You are most dear to Jesus as the trophies of His Precious Blood and to Mary, mother of mercy. Obtain for me through your intercession the grace to lead a holy life, to die a happy death and to attain to the blessedness of eternity in heaven. Dear suffering souls, who long to be delivered in order to praise and glorify God in heaven, by your unfailing pity help me in the needs which distress me at this time, particularly... So that I may obtain relief and assistance from God. In gratitude for your intercession I offer to God on your behalf, the satisfactory merits of my prayer and work, my joys and sufferings of this day (week, month, year or whatever space of time you wish to designate). Amen.
