Standing up to dictators is thoroughly Catholic
I try to write about The Bible, that's what I know. I was actually going through The Psalms, and I noticed something that reminded me of current events, but, before we go any further, read of course, my previous articleLenten laxity vs Lenten lenience vs Lenten legalism, but, also read “A lesson in victim blaming”.
I was thinking specifically of v. 7, but let's go ahead and read the whole thing, "In my distress I cry to the LORD, that he may answer me; Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue". What shall be given to you? And what more shall be done to you, you deceiful tongue? A warrior's sharp arrows, with glowing coals of the broom tree! Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war"!
Think about that for a minute, “I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war”!
How many times have we heard that the aggressor in a war “wants peace”, but won't lift a finger to stop a war HE started? It's such a bizarre thing to claim. If he wanted peace...he wouldn't have started a war.
And this is where the “deceitful tongue” aspect comes in.
“Ukrainians are Nazis” (Son of Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi Azman killed in action on frontlines), Kiev (because propagandists never spell it “Kyiv”, Ukraine’s MFA calls on international media to use #KyivNotKiev), “Ukrainians, Belarusians, and russians are all one people” (not really, Why are Ukrainians and Russians not fraternal peoples?), or that “russia is the big brother of Ukraine (the Cossacks would like to remind you of something, Who were Ukrainian Cossacks?/)
Keep in mind, russian propaganda about Ukraine is contradictory, how, exactly, can russia be brotherly nations with Ukraine when russia does stuff like this; Russian forces destroy Catholic church in Ukraine, as another parish prepares for attack (please stop repeating the propaganda that russia is a Christian country, it isn't).
Anyway, this article isn't about Ukraine, or russia, or history (though, like any good amateur historian, I don't go behind what I know or can find out). No, it's about the problem of duplicity. The problem of blaming the victims. The problem of making the assumption that because you voted for someone, he's somehow impossible of making mistakes.
Propaganda isn't hard to find. Whether it be political, scientific, or, even religious, it's there.
Now, of course, the classical meaning of the word just means “propagation”. But, that isn't how it's used. Don't be a mark for forget KGB agents, by claiming russia is a country that doesn't really exist. Don't have the Disneyland version of russia in your mind.
So, to recap, don't blame victims. Don't trust people that have already been proven untrustworth. And, for the love of goodness, don't just believe someone because you “feel” you can trust them.
Just remember, "I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war"!
