Navigating Storms with Faith as Compass: Reflection for 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time
It’s been two weeks since Lent started. Soon, we will be at the halfway point of our journey. I must ask the person reading this: How is it going?
For some, it has been productive. They’ve made good on their Lenten sacrifices. On the other hand, we have those who are struggling. Perhaps they have fallen short of what they want to do during Lent. All that can be offered is two words: keep going.
I offer these words after attending a meeting for the Knights of Columbus. In his opening remarks, the Grand Knight of my council opened his remarks by encouraging us to keep fighting the battle that is upon us.
For the Christians to make their Lent fruitful, they must have a persevering faith. This is the virtue of the fourth sorrowful mystery of the virtue.
While many argue that it can be patience, persevering faith is what has made many of the saints in the church. Some have gone through physical, emotional, and even social tribulations, but Christ assured us that he “overcame them.” (John 16:33)
We can overcome all the challenges the world will throw at us. Even the devil wants us to fail. Yet, God is our strength. God wants to see us achieve our goal of obtaining the glory of heaven when we give him our all.
With two weeks into the Lent, here are some things to ask ourselves as we look to get on the right track of our journey.
· Have I been consistent with our sacrifices?
· Have I prayed?
· Have I abstained from meat?
· Have I found some time for silence?
· Did I step away from technology?
· Did I give money to the poor or my parish?
· Have I gone to confession?
I bet you that the moment you do a good examination of how your journey is going you will be able to click again.
Babe Ruth once said, “It is hard to beat someone who doesn’t give up.” Be that person who won’t give up. All it takes is the virtue of perseverance.
Keep going. The journey continues. Persevere until the end.
