Nobody likes to be picked last. Nobody likes to be ignored. Nobody likes not being loved. But these are just the things Jesus is asking us to not to desire. He wants to tear us away from the material. The fabric that we cling to in this world. The meaningless, forgetful and unimportant things in life that we believe are so very important. Our opinion, and our two cents worth can often be overplayed and become a control battle. When in all reality, we have no say. Not really. God is the ruler and if He says "yes" then it is yes. And ultimately, if He says "no" it is surely a no.
Desiring things of this world are truly things that do fade away. All of our possessions, whether doled out to our loved ones when we die will surely disintegrate within the appropriate amount of time. But our desires, that are meant as our rules of life, such as compassion, love, humility, fidelity are the desires Jesus wants us to possess. They do not ever fade away.
People are fickle. Lots of times it seems they only remember the bad rather than the good. A baby is not born bad. A child or toddler is innocent. It's only the world that we have created for them that gives them bad behavior. Jesus wants us to teach these children to desire Him. Clinging close to His examples of love and forgiveness and trust in His Father. Jesus wants to teach us these desires as adults. But we can get caught up in wealth and fame and prestige. What really is the glamor of this world? It's fading and ever-changing. To me, I want to see the beauty of each new Spring or the glory at the sight of a snow-capped mountain, or the sound of the sweet birds ready to fly in the warm Summer sky.
Oh Lord, grant me the grace to desire only those things that enrich my soul for Thy greater glory. Leave me not to my own thoughts and turn my life to a life of surrender to you. Grant me the grace to desire it.
