The Word Matters
This coming Sunday’s Gospel is Jesus calling Lazarus back to life after he died. Have you ever wondered why Christ called Lazarus by name? If He hadn’t, every soul in the grave would have risen—it would have been the Second Coming. (Credit: Father Mark Beard) That same voice that called Lazarus is calling you by name today. It’s a personal, loving invitation to return to Him, and the key to that return is the Mass on a weekly basis.
The Mass is not just a ritual—it’s everything. The Mass is where we enter the Divine. It’s where your heart, mind, and soul are nourished. At Mass, you’re fed intellectually by the sacred scriptures: the Old Testament, the Psalms, the words of Jesus Himself in the Gospel. And then, you’re fed physically and spiritually by the glorified Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist.
Jesus told us, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day" (John 6:54). Attending Mass is the ultimate act of love for God—it’s the most powerful prayer you can offer. At Mass, Catholics are united in worship with the Communion of Saints and the entire Body of Christ.
Remember, God commanded us to keep the Sabbath day holy, which we honor by attending Mass and dedicating that day to Him. As Catholics, we believe from Saturday evening through Sunday is considered the Sabaath.
Maybe you’ve found reasons to stay away—disappointment in the Pope or heirarchy, busy schedules, or even frustrations with your local parish. But think about this: nothing and no one should come between you and your relationship with God – not the actions of others nor life’s distractions.
We’re in the midst of Lent, a sacred time for reconciliation and renewal. This is your moment to let go of excuses, to turn back, and to make things right with God. Make a confession to unburden yourself, and step back into His presence at Mass.
Jesus is inviting you to experience His promise:
"I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die." (John 11:25–26).
The time is now. Rise with Lazarus. Return to Mass. Rediscover your faith. God is calling you by name!
The greatest gift of charity is sharing your faith. Take a moment to share this article with someone who has drifted away from the practice of attending Mass.
