To the Ends of the Earth: Legacy – Week 9, Day 1 – Deny Yourself, Take Up Your Cross, and Follow Christ
For behold, I create new heavens
and a new earth;
and the former things shall not be remembered
or come into mind.
But be glad and rejoice for ever
in that which I create;
for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing,
and her people a joy.
I will rejoice in Jerusalem,
and be glad in my people;
no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping
and the cry of distress.
Isaiah 65:17–19
The beautiful poetic language of this passage from Isaiah gives us a glimpse into the joy, peace, and glory that we will experience when Jesus comes again. All of the sorrows and struggles of this life will one day be no more. The One who came to dwell with us as man will come again to judge the living and the dead. We who believe will dwell with him in a joyful eternity.
The kingdom of God is among us now; yet we see sin, division, sorrow, and evil of all kinds. Still, the spread of the Gospel continues as the Church journeys ever forward to the day when the Bride will be forever joined to the Bridegroom at the wedding feast of the Lamb. We cannot fully grasp the perfection and goodness to come, but we do know it will be wonderful, joyful, and everlasting. God will dwell with his people forever. This should strengthen us and empower us to live as kingdom participants, always seeking the will of God, living in the grace and love of the One who gave himself up to death on the cross and who continues to give himself to us in the Eucharist.
