Understanding the conclave

A Catholic conclave is a significant event in the Roman Catholic Church, specifically designed for the election of a new pope. Following the death and burial of Pope Francis, now the College of Cardinals will convene in a conclave to choose his successor.

This process is steeped in tradition and holds great importance for Catholics around the world, as the pope is viewed as the spiritual leader and symbol of unity for the global Church.

The conclave takes place in the Sistine Chapel, located in Vatican City. The Cardinals, who are the clergy members eligible to vote, enter the chapel after being secluded from the outside world to ensure they are free from outside influences during their deliberations. This seclusion is an essential aspect of the conclave, as it symbolizes the seriousness of the election and the need for prayerful reflection. The Cardinals vow not to communicate with anyone outside the conclave during this period, which can last several days. The Cardinals' focus on prayer and listening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to know who to elect as successor.

During the conclave, the Cardinals discuss the qualities they seek in a new pope. They participate in multiple rounds of voting which are secret and confidential. Each Cardinal casts a ballot, and if a candidate receives a two-thirds majority, he is elected. Should a pope not be elected after a series of votes, the Cardinals may alter voting procedures, which is often referred to as “balloting. ” 

The world watches the Sistine Chapel closely during the conclave and following each vote, there will be either black or white smoke to rise from the chapel chimney. Black smoke coming from the chapel indicates the vote did not end with an election of a new pope and the Cardinals will continue discussion and voting. White smoke rising from the chimney indicates to the world that a new pope has been chosen.

In recent years, the public has noted the importance of transparency and media coverage of such events. For instance, the conclave that took place in March 2013 to elect Pope Francis was closely followed by millions around the world, highlighting the interest in the outcome of the papal election.
