Mercy: Relationship Restored
Thomas was an apostle who endured the heartbreak and sorrow of losing Jesus. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to open himself up to Jesus rising from the dead. He didn’t want to open Himself up to yet another heartbreak and so His heart grew hard and he lost spiritual vision for a time until Jesus gave him tangible proof of His resurrection.
The same can happen to us. If you’ve ever endured a season of heartbreak or even heartbreak after heartbreak, you know that you can become a doubting and unbelieving person like Thomas. You may doubt your situation could ever be resurrected. You may lose some belief in God’s power to bring forth new life. Your heart becomes a bit dismal and hard hearted, distrusting towards the Lord. You may lose some spiritual vision and vigor.
Going through these seasons is spiritually and emotionally challenging. Those seasons can last far longer than the few days that Thomas endured -- many years sometimes. You’re challenged to believe in the power of resurrection even when you can’t see and don’t have tangible proof.
The call for us in these heartbreak seasons is to really live in the power of Jesus’s words today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
Let’s not lose our spiritual vision and vigor as we await Jesus’s resurrection power in our own lives.
