To the Ends of the Earth: Action – Week 9, Day 5 – Our Thanksgiving Should Manifest Itself in Words and Actions
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalms 40:1–3
The simple truth of humanity is that we were lost and unable to save ourselves, stuck in a pit of sin and despair and beyond hope. But the Son of God left his throne in heaven and came to earth to draw us up from that pit and set our feet on the right path toward heaven. He heard our cries for deliverance and restored us and put a song of praise in our mouths. That is why he has no equal!
Now we stand beside our brothers and live as members of a body of believers, working out our salvation and leading others into the kingdom of God. As Catholic men, we need to learn how to appreciate that powerful reality and allow it to shape the way we live for God. Our lives should shine forth as beacons of light to those who will come after us, and all we do should contribute to the Church to which we belong.
Questions for reflection
How does knowing you deserved hell but were given heaven influence how you live?
How often do you offer praise and thanksgiving to the One who redeemed you from the pit?
What message of hope are you leaving for those who long to be raised to new life?
Praying with Scripture
I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up,
and have not let my foes rejoice over me. (Ps 30:1)
