ANGER
Eileen Renders
We often say or do things in anger that we later regret. Is anger a sin?
Matthew 21:12-13, Jesus became angry and overturned tables when men were selling and gambling on the steps of the Temple. This tells us that anger is not a sin; however, what we do with our anger could be sinful if we lose control and hurt someone. Jesus was right to be angry, as they were not respecting the Temple of His Father in heaven.
Often, anger is hurt turned outward, and this causes one to react in a way to protect someone, or something owned that is of value. We want to question why someone was disrespectful and hurtful.
Psychologists have often explained that hurt turned inward without an outlet can lead to depression.
How or when does anger require the help of a professional? Not being a psychologist, I can only suggest that when one is angry often, or loses control when he/she becomes angry, it would be a positive idea to speak to a professional. Stress, overwork, super sensitivity, or some other physiological problem may be treated and resolved by one’s medical doctor.
Balance and moderation in our habits, feelings, and actions are how we present maturity and control.
When we regret our anger, especially when realizing we may have overreacted inappropriately to someone who said or did something unintentionally or to deliberately hurt anyone, we would be wise to apologize. Although anger is not a sin when it is done in defense or protection of something of huge importance, it may not be appropriate when expressed often, especially when there was no intention by the other party to hurt or maim.
Always, we would do well to pray whenever we are feeling bad about actions or words we regret having said to another. When we go to God for help, He hears us. We pray for control, understanding to replace our anger, and control over rage.
God may not answer our prayers the first time we get down on our knees and humble ourselves; however, when our prayers are earnest and frequent, God cannot resist our sincerity and love.
