A Lenten Treasure Hunt: Fourth Clue
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
I attended a Catholic school in Spain that introduced me to our Blessed Mother. We celebrated the feast of “La Niña María” (Mary, the little girl) in October. In December, we had the feast of the Immaculate Conception, which was the name of our school. And in May, the month of Mary, we prayed the rosary daily. But it was not until I became a mother myself that my relationship to my spiritual Mother strengthened.
Mama Mary, as I refer to her, understands the heart of a mother better than most because she experienced it all. She even suffered the ultimate pain, the death of her child. She has sat with me on multiple occasions, especially in the middle of the night. She has comforted me when my kids were sick. She has held my hand when I have been worried sick because it was 3 a.m. and they were out partying. She has dried all the tears I have shed. She has also rejoiced with me in all my kids’ accomplishments because they are her kids too.
A couple of years ago, I consecrated myself to Jesus through Mama Mary. I did the consecration on my own, using the book “33 Days to Morning Glory” by Father Michael E. Gaitley, MIC. It was amazing. It helped me to get to know the heart of our spiritual Mother. Last year, I renewed my consecration as part of a group, and it was even better than the first time. Through my consecration, I have entrusted my life to her motherly care, and I plan to renew my consecration on a yearly basis.
Thank you, Mama Mary, for your YES. Thank you, Mama Mary, for giving us your Son. Thank you for becoming our spiritual mother. Thank you for teaching us that we must “do whatever He tells us” (John 2:5). And thank you for your unconditional love in spite of the fact that you had to suffer much because of us.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mama Mary!!!
