Pandemics and Eternal Perspective
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his merciful love,
that he may deliver their soul from death,
and keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and shield.
Yes, our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your mercy, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
Psalms 33:18–22
There are certainly times when we look to the heavens and wonder if God really cares about the people he made. Sometimes it can seem easier to believe in an all-powerful God than to believe that he is concerned for us. Yet for us as Catholics, that anxiety has been shattered by the cross. We no longer have to worry about whether God loves us. He has shown us that he does by giving his only Son for the salvation of our souls.
Additionally, we can be assured that all the worries we face are under God’s sovereign control. God watches over us and delivers us through his strength. He knows what we need and works all things out in accordance with his perfect, holy will.
Our future in heaven is assured, our legacy on earth is secure. We demonstrate our patience as we wait for our deliverance and speak Christ’s holy name with confidence to the People of God. No matter what we are going through at any moment, our Father is looking down on us, covering us with his steadfast love and singing his eternal song into our hearts.
Questions for reflection
Have you ever experienced circumstances that caused you to question God’s will for your life?
Has there been a time in your life when you turned to the feeble strength of this world rather than God’s perfect love in the face of some doubt or worry? What was the result?
When have you seen your Father’s watchful care bring you victory and peace?
Praying with Scripture
The Lord is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him. (Ex 15:2)
