Sunday Bible Devotional (Nov 25, 2024)
The Ascension of the Lord moment marks a turning point in salvation history: Jesus, having fulfilled His earthly mission, returns to the Father—not to abandon us, but to launch the next chapter of God’s plan. He entrusts His disciples—and us—with the task of continuing His mission on earth.
In the first reading (Acts 1:1–11), we witness Jesus’ final moments with the apostles. He doesn’t leave them with vague parting words. He gives clear instructions: wait for the Holy Spirit, and then go out—be His witnesses to the very ends of the earth. This isn’t a goodbye; it’s a commissioning. It’s the spark that ignites the Church’s mission.
Psalm 47 rings out like a royal anthem. “God mounts His throne to shouts of joy!” It’s a triumphant celebration of Christ’s kingship and victory, calling all creation to rejoice. The Ascension isn’t about absence—it’s about enthronement. Jesus reigns from heaven, and His rule brings hope and assurance to our world.
In Ephesians 1:17–23, St. Paul offers a powerful prayer: that we might receive “a spirit of wisdom and revelation,” and truly grasp the hope we have in Christ. Jesus, now seated at the right hand of the Father, is the head of the Church—His body, which continues His work in the world. We aren’t just spectators in this story—we’re part of it.
Finally, in Luke 24:46–53, Jesus blesses His disciples and ascends before their eyes. But notice their reaction—they don’t grieve. They return to Jerusalem “with great joy,” filled with worship. Why? Because they understand: Jesus isn’t gone—He’s just working in a new way, through them.
The Ascension isn’t an ending—it’s a beginning. It calls us to step forward as witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit. It invites us to live with joyful urgency, knowing that Christ is both reigning above and working within us. So let’s rise to the moment. Let’s be the Church on mission—alive with hope, bold in faith, and ready to carry Christ’s light into the world.
