Sunday Gospel Reflection (March 9, 2025)
Pentecost is not just a celebration of something that happened long ago. It’s about what God is doing right now. Today we remember the moment the Holy Spirit came down and gave life to the Church—but more than that, we open our hearts to that same Spirit, who is still moving and working today.
The disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit, and suddenly people from all over the world can understand them. God isn’t just talking to one group, He’s speaking to everyone. That’s the Church’s mission: to bring Jesus to every person, no matter where they come from.
The Spirit gives life to everything. When God sends His Spirit, things change: hearts are renewed, courage is restored, and the world becomes a little more like the kingdom He intended.
St. Paul explains that the Holy Spirit gives each of us different gifts, some teach, some serve, some lead, but all are needed. There’s no “unimportant” role in the Church. If you’ve been given a gift, it’s for building up others, not just for yourself.
Jesus appears to His disciples and breathes the Holy Spirit on them. What’s the first thing He tells them to do? Forgive. That tells us a lot about what the Holy Spirit is about: peace, healing, and mercy. The Spirit brings us close to God, and then sends us out to bring others close, too.
Where is the Holy Spirit working in your life? What gifts has God given you? Who needs to hear the Gospel through your voice, your actions?
Come, Holy Spirit! Fill our hearts! Set us on fire! Send us out!
