Setting the Record Straight: The Real Conclave vs. Hollywood’s “Conclave”
POPE LEO vs. TRUMP?
Not so fast…
The headlines are loving this:
“Pope’s virtual stadium appearance steals attention from Trump’s military parade!”
“Immigrant Pope takes subtle swipe at America’s immigration policy!”
“The Vatican vs. MAGA!”
But here’s what’s really happening — and what Catholics, conservatives, critics, and everyone in between should hear:
First, let’s talk immigration — clearly.
The Catholic Church doesn’t preach open borders.
It doesn’t teach anarchy.
And it doesn’t deny a nation’s right to deport illegal immigrants.
From the Catechism (CCC 2241):
“Political authorities… may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions… immigrants are obliged to respect the laws of the country of adoption.”
That’s real. That’s Catholic teaching.
At the same time…
“The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of security and livelihood.”
That’s real too. And that’s where Christ stretches us.
The Pope isn’t calling for open borders.
And Trump isn’t evil for calling for law and order.
Both law and mercy matter.
Both sides can exist without contradiction.
So, what’s Pope Leo actually doing?
He’s reminding the world — as a Christian, a missionary, and yes, an immigrant descendant —
that every human being has dignity, even when they’ve broken the law.
And if that sounds controversial today…
maybe the Gospel should sound controversial in a hardened world.
What about Trump?
He’s reminding the world that nations must protect their people, their sovereignty, and their rule of law. And he’s not wrong.
The Pope doesn’t cancel that.
He calls us to do it without losing our soul.
This isn’t a battle. It’s a balance.
The media thrives on division.
They want “Pope vs. Trump” because they want a fight.
But Catholics should see it differently:
This is not a clash of enemies—
It’s a tension that demands virtue.
Virtue in leadership.
Virtue in law.
Virtue in mercy.
Pope Leo reminds us to love the person.
Trump reminds us to protect the country.
Both are needed.
Final Word for Catholics
Don’t get played. Don’t pick sides like it’s a football game.
Stay grounded in the Church. Stay rooted in Christ.
You are not Red. You are not Blue.
You are baptized.
You belong to a Kingdom that has no borders—
but still calls you to be salt and light within your country.
So speak truth.
Defend life.
Love the immigrant. Respect the law.
And stop letting headlines write your faith for you.
