Sunday Bible Devotional (Dec 1, 2024)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sees Levi, a tax collector, an outcast, a man most people avoid. Jesus says, “Follow me.” No conditions. No cleanup first. And Levi gets up and follows. Just like that. Jesus then sits down and eats with tax collectors and sinners. The religious crowd grumbles, but Jesus stops them in their tracks. He didn’t come for the righteous. He came for sinners.
Even though these controversial words have been misappropriated in the last 20 years, this is still the Jesus we follow. We cannot dismiss any of the words of Jesus just because we do not like the way they have been co-opted. Jesus runs toward the mess and not away from it. He meets us in the middle of our brokenness and invites us into something new.
The prophet Hosea gives us a bold reminder: “It is love I desire, not sacrifice; knowledge of God, not burnt offerings.” These too are words that are often misunderstood by modern culture. It is not that sacrifice or piety is inherently bad, but only when they are divorced from charity. God isn’t impressed by spiritual box-checking. What He wants is a heart that seeks Him honestly, humbly, and fully. This includes the rituals of religion, but those rituals must be formed by love.
Paul takes us back to Abraham, who believed God’s promise even when it looked impossible. He had no reason to hope, but he hoped anyway. That kind of trust looks crazy to the world, but it is the trust that God honors and rewards (even if the reward is not what we extected).
We’re not saved by our perfection, but by placing our faith in the God who brings life from what looks dead.
Jesus isn’t waiting until you’ve got it all figured out. He’s calling now. Like Levi, Hosea, Abraham or St. Paul, we don’t have to hesitate. Get up. Follow. Let the healing start now. The table is set, the call is clear—and it’s for you.
