When my mother was growing up there was a beautiful picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in their home, which is now hanging in her living room. I have a smaller image of the Sacred Heart in my bedroom and have been drawn to this devotion for years. However, it wasn’t until my father was dying of terminal cancer that I experienced Jesus’ promises to St. Margaret Mary on a deeper level.
During this Jubilee of the Sacred Heart, which began on December 27, 2023, the faithful have experienced renewed sense of devotion to Jesus’ loving presence among us as depicted in the image of His merciful Heart.
This Jubilee marked the 350th anniversary of Jesus’ appearance and the revelation of the message of His Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. Additionally, this Jubilee providentially coincided with the National Eucharistic Revival and the Jubilee Year of Hope—all strong reminders of our need to entrust ourselves to Jesus’ Eucharistic Heart.
In the marvelous new book Saints of the Sacred Heart, author Emily Jaminet helps readers—young and old—do just that through the devotion of holy men and women. The book also includes breathtaking paintings by one of my favorite artists, Tracy L. Christianson, creator of the popular “Portraits of Saints” masterpieces.
Readers will discover the spirituality of these remarkable saints, from heroic spiritual fathers and mothers to saints who juggled, to great spreaders of the gospel, and all who selflessly served others, reflecting the kindness of Jesus’ loving Heart.
Also included are compelling practical tips on living this devotion and beautiful prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Circling back to my opening story, my father spent his last days in our living room, where we had placed a hospital bed. In these moments of suffering, as he prepared to pass on to the next life, the picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus looked down upon him and our family. My father died on October 16, the Feast of St. Margaret Mary. This was a comfort to my family, as in Jesus’ promises to those who are devoted to His Sacred Heart, He said: “They shall not die in My disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”
Saints of the Sacred Heart is also a great comfort and source of hope, reminding us all that the Sacred Heart of Jesus is living among us and interceding for us still.
