In 2000, The Patriot was released as it told the story of Benjamin Martin, a veteran of the Colonial Wars turned pacifist was thrust into the heated debate of declaring independence from Great Britain. The movie is loosely based on Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, who engaged the British in the southern colonies.
Mel Gibson anchored a cast filled with rising and seasoned stars. He gave one of the most underrated performances of his acting career.
The movie itself gives us a lesson in putting one’s faith into action.
Benjamin Martin, a farmer in South Carolina, is raising seven children following the passing of his wife. He abstains from a vote to help the colony declare its independence from Great Britain. He pleaded that they try to continue peace talks, but he is shut down by a majority vote for war.
He believes that the colonies can govern themselves without a tyrannical force. Yet, he would not take a military position for the cause.
It would change when his son, Thomas, was killed by Colonel William Tavington. This pivotal event challenged Martin to take up arms and put what he believed into action. So, he would form a militia that would hinder General Cornwallis from advancing to the north until the French arrive.
Despite nearly giving up after the death of his oldest son, Gabriel, he would play a role in helping the Continental Army with his militia in defeating the British.
Sometimes we can be like the protagonist. There will be times when our beliefs will be challenged. Yet, the way we respond will make a difference.
Let’s take, for example, if we are prolife. Our simple statement is not enough. Instead, it needs to be put into action by praying outside of an abortion facility, collecting maternity items for mothers in need, and even volunteering for a pro-life coalition or pregnancy resource center.
There may be times that we can be discouraged, but as one line in the movie reminds us, “Stay the course”.
Benjamin Martin teaches us to stand by our convictions with more than just mere words. Our actions will speak louder when we put our words into practice.
While the movie has some historical inaccuracies, it provides us with lessons of faith. Gibson was stellar in the film; it deserves a 7 out of 10.
