Is following Jesus worth the effort?
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Luke 10:1–9
When Jesus began His public ministry, He quickly found that the work was far more than He alone could manage. So, He chose twelve Apostles to share in His mission. Yet even with them, the task was too great. He then appointed seventy-two others and sent them out as well. Still, it wasn’t enough. As He sent them, He said:
“The harvest is rich, but the labourers are few. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to His harvest.”
Two thousand years have passed, and the situation remains the same: an abundance of work and a shortage of workers. There is still more to be done than Jesus and His helpers, past or present, can accomplish alone. If you’re looking for a meaningful job, Jesus is hiring. He spent His entire earthly life helping others, and that work continues today. To join Him means sharing in His mission of loving and helping people.
Jesus’ concern was never limited to saving souls. He cared deeply for people’s material needs. Consider His ministry: He fed the hungry, healed the sick, befriended the lonely, forgave the guilty, challenged the proud, and defended the oppressed. Wherever there was human need, Jesus acted. People were His priority - always.
So where do we find this kind of work? How far must we go to join Jesus in His mission? In today’s world, a major challenge is often getting the job and the worker in the same place. But with Jesus, this is never a problem. The needs are right where we are, no long commute required. There are people in need of love in your home, on your street, at school, at work, everywhere your daily life takes you. The issue is not the absence of opportunity, but our lack of awareness. We need to open our eyes and see.
Jesus always noticed people. He saw Zacchaeus in a sycamore tree and changed his life. He spoke to a Samaritan woman at a well and awakened her to a new way of living. He noticed a man who had lain beside the pool of Bethesda for thirty-eight years, someone long forgotten by others, and restored him. Jesus saw what others missed. He was present to people. If we are to work with Him, we need eyes that see, hearts that care, and the will to act.
Is there any reward for this work? In terms of pounds and pence, probably not much. Jesus’ only financial promise was: The labourer deserves his wages.” He meant that basic needs, food, clothing, and shelter, would be provided. He never promised wealth. In His view, money was simply a tool to meet human needs. If financial gain is our main motive, we won’t be interested in this kind of job.
But this is, in truth, the best-paid job in the world. It brings a deep sense of fulfilment. The joy of knowing you’ve risen above self-interest and done something meaningful with your life is priceless. Scripture tells us: The seventy-two returned rejoicing.”
They were happy men, and that kind of happiness can’t be bought.
Lord Jesus, when we work for You, the raw material is people; the workplace is wherever we find ourselves; and the payment is deep personal joy and fulfilment. If we want that kind of job, we can begin today.
For truly, “the harvest is rich, but the labourers are few.”
