Only 14% of Catholics Read the Bible Weekly — Here’s Why That Needs to Change
Gen Z has left its mark on nearly every aspect of culture-the internet, the media, fashion, fitness. But God is calling us to leave an even deeper, eternal mark on the world: to live out our faith boldly and bring others to Christ.
As a member of Gen Z, I know how hard it can be to share your faith in a world that largely rejects Christian values. If you're also struggling, let me remind you: God has a mission for us.
We've never known a society where the One True Faith was widely accepted and lived out. Instead, we face a world that turns its back on us. Today's persecution doesn't always come through violence-it appears through mockery, shame, exclusion, and even hatred. The world considers us "weird", our beliefs unattractive, outdated, and incomprehensible.
When faced with this, it's tempting to stay quiet. We might think, "I don't need to worry about that. It's the priests' job, not mine." But God calls us all to live out our faith and spread His word, regardless of vocation.
And when it comes to sharing God's Word, faith in action carries great weight. When asked what drew them most to Christianity, a majority of non-Christian teens revealed that it's seeing someone live out their faith authentically. Faith in action is more impactful than words.
Gen Z is known to be an outspoken and bold generation. We know how to make ourselves heard; we need to know where to start. God created us like this for a reason. This generation possesses unique attributes that allow us to live out our faith in a special way. Here's how to utilize them:
Reach out to fellow Gen Zers who are struggling, lonely, or lost. Show them that Jesus comforts the troubled and the outcasts and calls them to share in His suffering.
Post short, authentic testimonies; share a Bible verse; or highlight a church, shrine, or retreat.
Bridge faith and mental wellness by sharing how God alleviates anxiety, depression, and suffering. Point friends to Christian resources and support systems.
Use Gen Z's passion for social justice to encourage Church service: defend the unborn, care for the poor, advocate for the sick, and fundraise for causes aligned with Catholic teaching
If you don't know who to evangelize, look around you. You most likely have a friend group or community whom you talk to regularly. Take advantage of those connections you've already made to bring people into the flock.
Evangelism isn't dead, but the Book of James states that faith without works is. In this fallen world that continues to stray further and further from Church teaching, we must be bold. You won't have the same energy, freedom, and influence forever, so use it now. Even if you don't actively participate in ministry, you spread the faith when you live it out without fear.
Jesus' command to "Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15) didn't apply to the Twelve alone. We are all His disciples, and He calls us all to spread the Word of God in whatever way we can. That includes you. It includes me. It includes us-Gen Z.
So, fellow members of Gen Z, let's go forth bravely and faithfully. Let's rise up and fulfill our calling to live our faith out loud without fear.
Let's do it together-for the greater glory of God.
