St. Joseph: The Silent Saint Every Catholic Should Know and Honor in March
"No Irish saint perhaps has so strong a local hold as Declan or has left so abiding a popular memory." -The Life of St. Declan of Ardmore
On July 24, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of a man of incredible grace: St. Declan of Ardmore. The selflessness, generosity, and piety of this highly esteemed Irish saint serve as reminders of how a Christian should behave.
The common narrative names St. Patrick as the first to bring Christianity to Ireland, but history points to four saints evangelizing there before or alongside Patrick. St. Declan is considered one of these pre-Patrician saints.
Though he was born into a wealthy family in the 5th century in Desi (modern-day County Waterford), St. Declan lived a humble life devoted to God. We know little about his early life, so his story begins when he was baptized by St. Colman, who became his spiritual instructor.
Following God's call, St. Declan took a pilgrimage to Rome. There, he underwent a transformative spiritual experience and was ordained a bishop. On his way home from Rome, he met St. Patrick. The two men shared a passion for evangelization.
St. Declan returned to Ireland and became the first bishop of Ardmore. With St. Patrick's blessing, St. Declan established a monastery there. He was a holy, pious, and dedicated bishop who devoted his time and energy completely to his flock.
Not only was St. Declan a bishop, but he was a trained evangelist who devoted his life to spreading Christianity in Ireland. His influence spread the Faith to the Déisi people. He founded churches and monasteries in the region, and he even impacted farming. He introduced certain agricultural methods to the Déisi people.
St. Declan performed several miracles in his lifetime, including healings and raising the dead. In a famous legend, a golden bell appeared while he celebrated Mass--a symbol of his sanctity.
In his later years, St. Declan retreated to a solitary coastal retreat, called "Declan's Desert." His virtuous life came to an end on July 24. He's honored as the patron saint of the Déisi people.
So, what can we take away from the life of this saint? It's easy to let feast days slip away unnoticed, especially the ones that seem more "minor." But each feast day commemorates a different holy man or woman who accomplished what we all strive to do: get to heaven.
St. Declan teaches us to be humble servants of God through serving our community. He's a holy example of generosity, piety, and passion for spreading the Word of God. As an adult convert, he reminds us that it's never too late to turn to God.
St. Declan of Ardmore, pray for us.
