August 2024 Feast Days and Important Dates
Through the power of his Resurrection, Christ has adorned Mary with the robe of his own grandeur and majesty and arrayed her with glory and splendor. These garments of salvation are the revelation and crown of the holiness with which she lived her life on earth.
The Blessed Virgin Mary’s bodily Assumption into heaven makes clear to us that there is room for our humanity in heaven. Mary’s Assumption assures us that what Jesus accomplished in rising from the dead and ascending into heaven was not limited to his own Person.
Even though we are not divine, we, too, are meant to be in heaven with the Incarnate Son, in his home with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Mother Mary Teresa Tallon wrote, “Anyone who has suffered long and submissively for the cause of Our Lord knows how to appreciate the intense joy that comes from seeing God triumphant.” She continues, “Therefore, the Blessed Virgin, by the fact that she was closest to our Lord all through his suffering life, appreciated his Resurrection and understood his position after the Ascension. Also, she entered more fully into the meaning of the triumph when their sufferings were completed.”
Holiness of life is God’s gift and our decision, both given through the gift of Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of the Virgin Mary, his first disciple and his gift of hope to all who follow her as servants of the living Word.
As we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary’s Assumption, let us strive to be in heaven with Jesus, Mary, and all of the saints. It will be made possible if we fulfill God’s will on earth to make his kingdom come now.
