Humble Obedience
In 1970, James Taylor released a chart-topping hit called “Fire and Rain”. Before releasing the song, the lyrics were written in 1968. His song is relatable to many, as it highlights the vulnerability we experience as human beings when we struggle.
The hit song, which propelled Taylor’s solo career, had some deep messages about his struggle, loss, and how he called on Jesus to help him overcome his addiction. It even includes the catchy and memorable refrain
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Loss of a Friend
The first lyric reads,
“Just yesterday mornin', they let me know you were gone Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song I just can't remember who to send it to”
Taylor referred to his close friend, Suzanne Schnerr. Schnerr took her life. Taylor’s friends hid the news as they feared it would affect his work while recording with the Beatles.
Addiction Battle
Taylor, like many artists at the time, would engage in heavy substance abuse. He lays it out in the second lyrics as he wrote
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus? You've got to help me make a stand You've just got to see me through another day My body's aching and my time is at hand And I won't make it any other way
Many artists share about a vulnerable part of their lives. Taylor was no different. He admitted about what he went through in his career. What is striking is how he relying on Jesus to help him get over the addiction. That prayer would be answered two decades later.
Challenges of Navigating Fame
Been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows, when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
At the time of writing the song, Taylor was part of an American group called the Flying Machine. The group never took off. He went through a period of depression after a failed experience with the band.
Fire and Rain is seen as a metaphor. Fire can represent destruction, pain, and intense emotions, while rain can symbolize cleansing, healing, and the passage of time.
This is what more artists need to put in their songwriting. They need to put human emotion in it.
