“Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple,” Jesus says in the Gospel today.
What does this mean for all of who have lots of possessions?
Possessions are often at odds with being Jesus’ full-time disciple. Why is that?
- We may spend more time amassing possessions than we do serving Jesus. For instance, are our weekends spent shopping or serving?
- We may not do God’s will because we fear losing possessions. Often, God’s will involves some element of sacrifice.
- We may not share possessions with those who need them more than we do. How much of what you own have you given away recently?
- We may become so inordinately obsessed with “possessing” that we close our hearts to opportunities to help that need our heart’s detachment.
If any of these reasons ring a bell for you, maybe this is the line of the Gospel God wants you to pay attention to today.
How might you renounce possessions to better serve Jesus?
