The Abolition of Time Slavery to Money: Sales and Marketing
Hello,
You should own your own business.
I am tired of pretending like you should not. I have been on this warpath for a while now against usury, the corporate system, crony Capitalism, and all of the disorders that leave the men of the Church totally enslaved to godless weirdos nine to five every day. And I tell men, you ought to be able to spend more time with your sons. Your fathers didn’t spend enough time with you, and that is why you are so weird and confused, just like me and everyone else, too. They respond saying, “My father took me on activities every weekend!” Ah, fool! He should have been with you sixteen hours a day seven days a week! What, that’s impossible? It should not be. That is how my life is right now. It drives me crazy! My son is banging things around at 6:00AM in my garage right behind this stinking computer, dying for the sun to come up so we can go and dig a cellar. That is how it should be! Having a job is too easy for a real man.
The problem is that not enough godly men own their own business. This is by design. We are taught to be absolutely petrified with it, and the worse our economic situation gets, the more scared we are. We have a little bit of time and money; we are totally strapped; every single spare dollar and hour is so precious. If we take one hundred dollars or one hour and put it into something for ourselves, and we don’t succeed but lose that money or time, we blame the pursuit of business because of its slight possibility for failure rather than the state of life which has made us so desperate to begin with: Employment! Employment consumes all of your thousands of dollars every single month so that there is nothing left for the Church or for your neighbor or for the poor, makes you an enemy to all of your friends if they might ask something of you, even an hour of your time!
Anyways, this is my introduction. I have been working on it for a while. This is the fifth or so draft.
I am writing a course on how to own your own business. Below is the third part of the course:
Business Course: Part Three: Sales and Marketing
Now that we have talked about business and the reason for it, and how to start a business, we should talk about sales and marketing
Sales is an angry or uncomfortable subject for most people. There is a reason for that. Our economy as it stands rests on the fact that most things purchased are absolutely useless or at least extraneous. This is a result of long history and philosophy and its consequences, and you can learn more about this by listening to more of my material on these subjects.
What Sales and Marketing Is
But suffice it to say, things need to be sold in order to be purchased.
Sales and marketing is the process of convincing people to buy things. Any good salesman will tell me that it is bad sales to do that, and yet, anybody purchasing and anybody running a business knows that that is what it is. What a salesman is leaning on when he says that, is the fact that the best products “sell themselves”. That means that people choose to buy them because they are good and necessary, but the people just do not know about them. This is accomplished by the previous work we have discussed, that of starting a business. If you start a business well, keeping in mind these principles about who you are serving and what needs you are filling, then sales and marketing will be possible, but it will always be difficult.
Marketing is when you put out information about your product into the public. Sales is when a man is commissioned to do the same in a personal and direct way.
The reason why you would do sales is because you are selling to a specific group that is best found personally. For instance, my linens to priests and clergy. The reason why you would do marketing is because you are selling to a broader public that prefers less direct treatment. For instance, my pork products, or clothes, or media (for the last, I always get anonymous donations to support me; people hardly ever want any credit for supporting a controversial but correct speaker)
Everybody who works in the modern economy and collects a paycheck does so as a beneficiary of a business owner first and a salesman second. And without the salesman (or marketing professional), then neither the business owner nor the technical worker would have a paycheck. The only reason why a business owner comes first is because he must do sales himself before he can delegate the work to a salesman. This is because of the Personality of a Salesman
Process of doing sales and marketing yourself first and then delegation
I want to prove that I am doing these things real-time so that you can have more credence in me. I have done them in the past successfully, as well.
For my linen business, I first started by soliciting people I knew for support. That brought in three months of work and revenue. I then made a list of people I knew who seemed to fit the bill: Catholics. I figured every Catholic had a priest that needed linens. My linens were better, so I called them. This did not bring in anything. I thought about where the revenue had come from up until that point, and I realized that monasteries were more likely to buy good, quality linen, because they are serving our Lord more directly and not through the person of the poor. I visited a monastery, failed to sell, then realized I would have to do phone calls and emails rather than visits. I did these a few times and got some results. Then, I sat down and thought about how much I could realistically do a day, and I did one a day. As I did this consistently, I was able to speak more simply and straightforwardly to what I was trying to sell, but in the beginning it was awkward and difficult. I acknowledged this openly to the people I called, saying I am not a good salesman, but it is what God has me doing right now. Because my product was necessary and good, I was carried through, and it was not so painful as it would have been if I was selling something with a worse reputation.
For our clothing business, my wife has taken the forefront. She went through a similar process, posting on social media, establishing her voice, figuring out her consistent rate, improving over time, being humble and genuine. Openly realizing that what she is doing is putting herself into the public eye in a humiliating manner for the sake of growing notoriety and building a business, as penance. She regularly needed encouragement from me (multiple times a day, sometimes hours), and I had to recruit my friends to encourage her. Now, the last few days, her social media account has multiplied by twenty, and the quality of her audience remains fairly stable, so that these people are seriously interested in buying her handmade clothes.
Personality of a Salesman
Neither me or my wife have the personality of a salesman. That is alright. The unnatural way of our economics right now basically guarantees that a salesman does not start a business, and a business owner is not good at sales. The reason is because a business owner usually has a more detailed mind that considers possibilities and risks (not always), while a good salesman has a lighter and freer mind that can do a simple task repeatedly, adapt and overcome, without changing too rapidly.
The reason why that sort of temperament (called choleric-sanguine by good psychologists) is fitting for a salesman is because sales requires a consistency in action despite forceful, emotional feedback. Namely, if you try to sell ten times, it is very likely that all ten times, the person who you are selling to will try to convince you that you are doing something bad and should stop. They may be right, of course. Most sales is bad and should stop. However, there is no way to realistically confirm that from this experience. It is much more likely that you will need to try one hundred or one thousand times before you will learn this way.
Instead, what should be done before anyone enters sales, is the same thing that was done when we talked about starting a business: Is this thing necessary or good? If it is not, but you can provide for your family or yourself this way, it is still legitimate to sell it, but it is much harder. If it is necessary or good, then the feedback you get from the people you are selling to is not reliable. Why? They already decided (if they said no), that what you are doing is not necessary or not good. You know that you disagree on a fundamental paradigm, and so they have a radically different perspective from you. Nevertheless, you have to be polite and engaging even with a bad sale, so you allow their opinions into your mind, and have to withstand the discouragement that necessarily results.
How to do sales
There are endless books on this. I am not a good salesman. I am not here to teach you sales. My rules for sales are what I have implied before: Set a consistent metric, try to keep to it, be slow to change, be realistic with your encouragement and discouragement, and, as a businessman, do it for long enough that you can legitimately ask someone else to do it for you. Otherwise, nobody will do it. There are many, many job postings for salesmen, marketers, social media managers. Every business wants to hire this position out, because it sucks, and because they are not willing to learn how to do it themselves. So learn it, do it, and then you can try and get someone else to help you with it. Otherwise, you are a bad leader. It is better to be a bad salesman than a bad leader.
In conclusion, appreciate sales and marketing, learn to do it, if you are bad at it, that is okay. It is an unfortunately necessary part of modern economics. You have a paycheck right now because someone sold something. If they did not sell that thing, probably badly, aggressively, under pressure, under discouragement, then you would not have a job. This applies also to government jobs.
Forgive me if this does not seem to be an exhaustive lesson on this subject. These articles are drafts. The full course is under production. You will help me a lot if you comment with your complaints and questions.
