"The King of Kings" (2025)
Dear Editor:
Your piece on Pedro Arrupe, SJ, is gravely deficient (i.e., https://zenit.org/2025/09/21/pedro-arrupes-legacy-confronts-a-new-test-amid-jesuit-abuse-lawsuit/?eti=27592)
Even before his priestly ordination as a Jesuit, Paul Mankowski "was bothered by the numerous pictures of Pedro Arrupe, the Jesuits' (liberal) father general, that adorned his community's walls rather than pictures of John Paul II, who was the pope at the time. As described previously, he became extremely concerned after he learned of the Jesuits' 'institutional apostasy' on the Church's teaching regarding homosexuality, and he quickly learned that this was not the only way in which the Jesuits disagreed — openly — with the Church" (P.58)
"Pro life" only in a bizarro world, Robert Drinan, SJ was a notoriously dependable pro abortion vote when he served in the U.S. Congress: "Arrupe had allowed Drinan's operatives to dupe him, and once he discovered that he had been duped, Arrupe caved and did not step up to declare opposition to Drinan" (p. 61).
Pedro Arrupe should absolutely not be canonized.
