Seven Last Words of Jesus: Father Forgive Them
As Catholics, we are called to live in the light of Christ, avoiding occasions of sin and environments that can lead us away from God’s grace. While God created the world and declared it “good” (Genesis 1:31), not every place fosters holiness or supports our journey toward salvation. Some places directly contradict the teachings of the Church and can expose us to spiritual dangers.
In our daily lives, where we choose to go matters. Just as a person concerned about their physical health avoids toxic environments filled with smoke, germs, or pollutants, so too must a Catholic protect their spiritual health by avoiding certain places that corrupt the soul rather than nourish it with grace. Below are key places that a Catholic should never visit and the reasons why they pose dangers to one’s faith and salvation.
Occult Centers and Witchcraft Shops
Astrology parlors, fortune-telling booths, tarot card reading shops, palm readers, and other occult establishments are dangerous because they open the door to the demonic. Many people, often out of curiosity or desperation, step into such places hoping to know their future, solve personal problems, or gain success in life. But this is a grave sin against God’s authority.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2116) is explicit: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead, or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”
Engaging in these practices is not harmless entertainment; it is a direct rejection of trust in God’s providence. Every time a person consults the occult, they invite dark spiritual forces into their lives, sometimes with lifelong consequences.
Temples or Shrines Dedicated to False Gods
In today’s world of religious pluralism and cultural exchanges, Catholics often encounter temples, shrines, and sacred spaces dedicated to deities of other religions. While interfaith dialogue and respect for others are important, Catholics must not participate in acts of worship at such sites.
Scripture warns against this clearly: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons” (1 Corinthians 10:21). Visiting such places out of respect or cultural curiosity may be acceptable in limited contexts, but entering with the intention of worship or participating in rituals violates the First Commandment, which calls us to worship God alone. Early Christians often suffered martyrdom rather than offer even a pinch of incense to pagan idols. Their witness should inspire us to remain faithful today.
Pornographic Theaters and Adult Entertainment Venues
The human body is sacred, created in God’s image and destined for resurrection. Unfortunately, pornography and adult entertainment strip away that dignity, turning human persons into objects for lust and profit.
Jesus Himself warned: “Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).
Pornographic theaters, strip clubs, and adult venues are grave occasions of sin. They not only enslave the mind in impurity but also support industries that exploit, demean, and often abuse vulnerable people. For a Catholic seeking holiness, these places are spiritual poison and must be avoided at all costs.
4. Clubs That Promote Immorality.
Not every social gathering is bad. Catholics can enjoy music, dance, and wholesome entertainment. But many modern clubs, bars, and party venues are designed around sin—encouraging drunkenness, drug use, promiscuity, and reckless living.
The danger of these environments is not simply the activities but the near occasions of sin they create. A person may go in with innocent intentions but find themselves tempted beyond their strength, compromising purity, sobriety, or faithfulness.
St. Paul’s warning rings true here: “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33). When deciding where to spend leisure time, Catholics must discern whether the environment uplifts or degrades their soul.
Satanic or Anti-Christian Sites
There is perhaps no greater danger than deliberately stepping into places associated with satanic worship, black masses, or anti-Christian rituals. These are not simply “alternative spiritual practices”—they are outright rejections of God and acts of allegiance to the devil.
Some may be tempted to visit such places out of curiosity, skepticism, or even mockery. But these encounters are not harmless. Demonic forces thrive where they are invited, and even passive attendance at such gatherings risks spiritual oppression.
The Church’s stance is absolute: avoid these places entirely. Instead, immerse yourself in the sacraments, Scripture, and prayer—the true armor against the devil.
Abortion Clinics and Pro-Death Centers (Unless for Peaceful Protest)
A Catholic should never enter an abortion clinic to seek services, because abortion is a grave moral evil. It violates the Fifth Commandment: “Thou shalt not kill.” Every abortion ends the life of an innocent child, wounds the mother, and damages society.
However, Catholics are encouraged to visit abortion clinics for a very different purpose—prayer, peaceful protest, and sidewalk counseling. Ministries like 40 Days for Life have shown the power of standing outside these centers with love and prayer, offering alternatives to women in crisis. These are acts of mercy and courage that defend the dignity of human life.
Haunted Houses or Paranormal Tourism Spots
In our culture, there is a fascination with ghosts, spirits, and the paranormal. Haunted houses, psychic tours, ghost-hunting expeditions, and “spiritual tourism” to sites of supposed supernatural activity are often advertised as fun or thrilling. But these practices open the door to superstition and even demonic influence.
The Bible warns us to avoid all forms of seeking the dead or spirits:
“Let no one be found among you… who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
While some so-called haunted sites may be explained naturally, the deliberate act of engaging with the paranormal shows a lack of trust in God’s providence and exposes us to spiritual dangers.
Why Avoiding These Places Matters
Some may argue that avoiding these places is too strict or “old-fashioned.” But the truth is, where we go shapes who we become. Every place we step into influences our thoughts, emotions, and choices.
If you spend time in places of sin, sin begins to feel normal.
If you spend time in places of holiness, grace becomes your environment.
Our bodies and souls are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Choosing where to go is not just about entertainment or curiosity—it is about guarding the dwelling place of God within us.
Choose Holy Ground Instead
If Catholics should avoid places that corrupt the soul, then where should we go? The answer is simple: seek out places that uplift the soul and bring us closer to Christ.
Churches and Adoration Chapels — where Christ is truly present in the Eucharist.
Marian Shrines — where countless miracles and conversions have occurred.
Retreat Centers and Monasteries — where silence and prayer heal the soul.
Holy Pilgrimage Sites — where faith is deepened and the saints’ witness strengthens us.
Visiting such places transforms the heart and fills us with the peace the world cannot give.
As Catholics, we are not called to flirt with sin or see how close we can get to danger. We are called to holiness, to “set our minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). By avoiding places that dishonor God and choosing holy ground instead, we protect our souls and grow in grace.
Remember: your body and soul are temples of the Holy Spirit—guard them wisely by choosing environments that glorify God and lead you closer to Heaven.
