OUR LADY OF MERCY
Those who grew up in the 1950s may remember the debut of a comic strip known as Peanuts that featured Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Linus, Lucy, and many other beloved characters. It is still loved by many today.
The comic strip would make its debut on October 2nd, 1950. It would run in syndicated daily and Sunday papers until February 2000. Yet, the Peanuts and the beloved dog Snoopy would continue to be a part of everyone’s childhood through TV specials, movies, and even music.
Charlie Brown and his friends offer lessons that have resonated during the last 75 years. Those lessons are worthy of note.
Finding True Meaning
In today’s culture, we are always looking for our purpose in life. Charlie was often humiliated and rejected, which teaches us that it will happen during our own journey. It shows us that we must seek what is true and good, no matter how hard the path gets in our spiritual journey.
For Charlie Brown, his spiritual insight involves seeking and seeing beauty in the world, even amidst the distractions of commercialism.
Perseverance and Authenticity
Charlie Brown was seen as an outcast by his friends. Despite being different than the rest, Charlie Brown continued to lead. He led with emotional honesty despite failing and being rejected. Yet, he continued to lead because he persevered.
This shows us that when we have faith, it can help us get through the most difficult obstacles in our lives. St. John of the Cross reminds us, “Though the path is plain and smooth for men of good will, he who walks it will not travel far, and will do so only with difficulty, if he does not have good feet: that is, courage and a persevering spirit.”
Happy 75 Years, Charlie Brown
