St. Melito's Ancient Holy Saturday Homily
October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. I’ve always enjoyed the month dedicated to the most powerful prayer our mother has given to us.
I have grown fond of the devotion when I was eighteen after I became a Knight of Columbus. My council has long prayed the rosary before the meeting. I saw it a a great spiritual bonding with not just my fellow knights but with our mother.
In the spring of 2017, I attended a Catholic Singles Conference. I remember taking part in a rosary walk. After we finished the rosary, I remarked to the group that “every time we pray the sacred mysteries, we walk with Mary to the Heart of Jesus.”
In the mysteries, we contemplate not just Mary but also the major life events of our lord. Mary was there for many of them, from the times of joy, trial, and suffering. Mary is the central part of why Catholics have a powerful devotion to the rosary.
Through the rosary, Mary accompanies us to Jesus. We learn the virtues that shape our faith and the ones that made Christ, as he calls us to emulate him through them.
Fulton Sheen reminds us that the rosary is, “The book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.”
We live in evil times. Yet, the rosary has been a powerful weapon to combat the spiritual forces that lie us under siege. Jesus and Mary can guide us through the tribulations in our lives when we call upon them to protect and guide us.
Mom is waiting for you to call her. Pray the rosary. Its power is beyond description.
