What would we do without love?
It is a horrible thing to witness someone in the bondage of addiction. Bound from head to foot in a cycle of evil, that slowly and painfully tears them away from the person they were. Destroying lives along the way, especially their own, it creeps in silently and then becomes full-blown in the blink of an eye. Eyes watching. Heart's aching. Patience disintegrating. Everything in moderation. Isn't that what the adage says? Where and when does it become neglect? When the threat of divorce is presented or even death arrives because of the defomation that has occurred because of it? When is enough, enough?
The eyes and ears of the innocent are watching. In anxiety and confusion we listen to the excuses. Over and over and over. Thanking God for allowing them to see another day, in hopes that this new day will be the one when peace arrives in their soul.
What I have seen is that addiction goes even further than selfishness. It may start as self-inducing, but then becomes a master of destruction to one's heart and soul and body. It goes past caring about that spouse or child that is enduring this monstrous trial with you.
Strength is needed. The Sacraments are needed. God is needed.
Promises are broken and having to start again from the bottom is a constant trial of crawling out of the grave they have put themselves into. The bondages of addiction are just that. Chains and shackles that are forever heavy upon the feet and hands that choose this hell.
Pray today for all who are addicted to anything, as addictions come in all forms. Pray for them to be released from this torment and ask our Lord to set them free. All things are possible in God who is our Savior.
