St. Dismi
My children laugh at me because I have a cheaper version of the cell phones that are constantly being offered for people today. They say, "Mother! You need to get a better phone!" I say, "I'm fine with the one I have!" Granted, it's not so old as a flip phone, but it cost me thousands of dollars less than the ones I see today. Wasted money. I see people looking at their phones constantly, scrolling through meaningless posts on Facebook, which I think are totally absurd. I see them sitting at the breakfast table or out to eat, with each of them with a phone in their hands instead of talking to each other. I see babies of 3 years old with a phone in their hand. A fake babysitter. People reading and prying into lives that live to show the world, and yes the world, they're fantastic vacations or some worthless opinion about politics. I am guilty of watching funny reels on tiktok that make me actually laugh out loud. But oh, what a waste of time! I've cut down after the realization of the wasted time I have spent myself, when I should be doing something more constructive, like praying. It hooks you and one can spend hours just scrolling away. It's not good. It's a portal. The devil can be let in if not used appropriately. It's an easy catch. Something that the devil is quite cunning in using. He loves to give us distractions. I've come to the conclusion, that I just need my phone, for phone calls and needed emails for information on events and purchases that are meaningful. For phone numbers stored. For prayers and upkeep of my Spiritual life in meditations of God. I feel ashamed when I freak out if I've left my phone at home and then realize I've lived without this so-called necessity for years, when cell phones were non-existent. A person feels pressed for time when too much of it has been wasted scrolling away. When needed obligations are delayed because one was looking too long at the phone. Blessed Mother said, "a little black box will help with the demise of creation." Hmmm. Could it be this little black box every human being carries with them? In my opinion, yes.
How do you use your phone? Is it so necessary that you have when in Church? Maybe for a doctor who is on call or a parent who is needing to keep in touch with the child who is away on a trip. Otherwise, no. Phones should be used like any other utility, that if needed, for particular uses such as needed phone calls sent or received. Otherwise, pick up that Bible or a Rosary. Those things will do much more good than a Facebook post or silly tiktok reel. Think about it.
