Beware the spiritual abuse

So, it's been a while since we've visited the New Testament. Well, actually, by this point, you'll have read about how gay the Scots Language Centre has become. (I tend to write my articles ahead of time)
Anyway, I was thinking about something. I was flipping through my Bible, and came across this in Mark;
“He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him, were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses, and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us”? And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household. And he could do not might works there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he her marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching” (Mark 6:1-7)
So, I was thinking about this. Jewish was a rabbi. I mean, even teaching in the synagogue. And, you know, rabbis can be taking pretty seriously with the Jewish people.
But, what I found interesting, isn't so much that his hometown took offense at him, but, how they knew him and were still surprised.
Wait a minute, though. Presumably, these same people grew up listening to him, and and discussing scriptures and praying with him.
The Jewish people have seen miracles. But, the truth is, is that sometimes, “seeing is believing” isn't always accurate.
I know a woman whose father, at one point, called himself an atheist. Her father also said that he had seen ghosts, while claiming to be an atheist.
Question: How can you believe in an afterlife if you don't believe God's existence? The two things seem to go hand in hand.
I think with some people, they don't want to believe.
