Biblical Geography
If you'd like to help me out this Advent, go here;Help with medical bills, and, before you read this, PLEASE check out this article, Beware the spiritual abuse
So, since I touched on spiritual abuse in my last article, I want to touch on the idea of clericalism in this article. Why? Because a priest feeling like he can commit acts of spiritual abuse is directly related to clericalism. (5 Of the many times Pope Francis has warned against clericalism)
“Clericalism could be defined as a false or sycophantic respect and esteem for clergy. It lends to the persons of priests, in view of their clerical office, an excessive deference and acquiescence. In a clericalist culture, the clergy often stand above and aloof to their flocks, to which distance the faithful can respond in a childish spirit of obedience and false reverence.”.
So, I don't want to talk so much about the sycophantic respect and esteem for clergy. What I DO want to talk about, is that the clericalist thinks he has a type of respect that isn't earned. Some people may have views of the cleric as above the position he has, but, at the same time, he might often put himself above the position of her flock.
Anyway, I didn't want to write a whole lot for this article, I just wanted to touch on this.
Surprisingly, or (sadly), unsurprisingly, I had found a lot articles defending clericalism.
C'est la vie , mais , porquoi ?
As for what a pastor's actual role should be;
“So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but, eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposed the proud but gives grace to the humble”
(1 Peter 5:1-5).
