Avoiding the Christmas Creep
Many baby boomers remember watching a beloved primetime special on November 30th, 1965, which featured Charlie Brown, Linus, Sally, and Snoopy. Yes, Charlie Brown Christmas is 60 years old and has stood the test of time.
The show was nearly canceled because of one scene in which Linus quotes the Gospel of Luke, but the network took a risk, and the special has flourished for generations to come.
The special follows Charlie Brown, who is struggling to understand the true meaning of Christmas, as he directs a Christmas play. Like many other specials, Charlie gets berated, ridiculed, and chastised for ruining or destroying things. One such is the Christmas tree. It would be his brother, Linus would help him understand what Christmas means to us all.
For a Christmas special that is 30 minutes long, it does give us four powerful lessons.
Faith and materialism
The special contrasts the commercialism of Christmas with its deeper, spiritual meaning. Charlie Brown’s frustration with the greed and commercialism of the season reflects the idea that material possessions are not what matter most. Linus’s recitation of the Christmas story from the Bible is the central moment that shifts the focus from material wealth to the birth of Jesus.
Finding faith in the simple
The humble, scraggly Christmas tree that Charlie Brown chooses becomes a powerful symbol. It represents the idea that God can be found in small and humble moments, not just grand displays. The children’s act of decorating the humble tree shows that with community and love, even the most overlooked things can be beautiful and full of meaning.
Overcoming fear and doubt
Linus’s choice to set aside his "security blanket" after reciting the Christmas story illustrates faith overcoming fear. The lesson is that the message of Jesus's birth offers a hope that can free people from their anxieties and insecurities. This demonstrates that putting trust in Christ can help individuals face the future without fear.
God's perspective
The special conveys the message that God sees and loves people for who they are, including their weaknesses and imperfections. It suggests that God doesn't abandon people who are feeling lost or broken but offers a way to find forgiveness, restoration, and connection. The story ultimately brings the characters together, showing how community and shared love are powerful forces that can create something meaningful and lasting.
As one of my favorite Christmas shows, I always look forward to watching it, year after year. The special gets to the core of what Christmas is about. It steps away from the commercialism and delivers the message of how Christ came to free us.
