Kada Scott and Failed Justice System
Every year, parents look forward to the tradition of having their children take a picture with Santa at the mall. It can be exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking as the child may be uncomfortable. It provides an easy pass for parents.
I have never been a fan of this tradition, as I was never comfortable posing with someone dressed up as someone who has Catholic origins, but he was made into a fictitious figure for the holiday spirit. Yet, many young children look forward to seeing him every year.
But how often do we take our children to meet Jesus? You see, Jesus always waits for us. It’s not just once a year but daily. Parents should be leading them to Christ more than to someone posing as someone who doesn’t exist. Even Christ asked that the children come to him (Matthew 19:14) and (Luke 18:15-17).
St. John Henry Newman reminds us, "I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for nothing."
Parents are the first teachers of the faith. We need the faith at the center of our Advent and Christmas preparations. It begins by leading our children to Christ. Here are suggestions
Get to Mass
Every Sunday (or Saturday evening), an hour or two should be set aside. Christ is present at Mass and will always be present every time we receive him in the Eucharist. The Mass helps us to refocus our attention on what the true meaning of Christmas is about, and that is Jesus.
Adoration
Now, depending on the age of the children, they may not be able to do a full hour. However, parents can still help their children build discipline in helping their kids grow in the faith and adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Read the Gospel of Luke
A popular devotion during Advent is reading the Gospel of Luke from beginning to end. The gospel lays out perfectly Christ’s salvation.
Our goal during Advent is to prepare our hearts for Christ. Yes, we can enjoy all of the festive activities with family and friends. Yet, preparing our souls for Christ is important
Always let your children to Christ. It will change their lives. Christ longs for them. Lead them to him.
