Preparing For The Final Curtain
Let’s Talk about A Long Life! What Does the Bible Say?
Eileen Renders
This is a subject matter that has always touched me deeply when there is the passing of a young person’s life. It seems sad, and often incomprehensible, as they have not yet experienced the learning, emotional, or spiritual maturity, nor the love of a partner, nor the experience of becoming a mother or father. It certainly saddens most of us. Yet, it also directs our thoughts to the other end of the spectrum, which is, “Why do some live such unusually long lives?
I, for one, search for those answers. Especially, since I fall into a small percentage of people who have already lived a long life at 86 years of age. Also, to add to that, I still write for Jesus, drive my car, cook every day, exercise regularly, and am told that I look twenty years younger. Although I am grateful to God, I do not mention this to draw attention, but rather to ponder God’s mysterious ways.
Sharing how my relationship with God has deepened over the years, I will share my thoughts, inspiration, and conclusion on how this type of disparity might occur between one’s age at the time of death.
In Psalm 90:10, the Catholic Bible states: "The days of our years are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; yet all they bring us is trouble and sorrow; life is soon over, and we are gone." Bible Hub
Catholic Verses on Longevity
The Catholic Church emphasizes the importance of living a life that honors God and fulfills His commandments. Here are some Catholic verses that reflect on the concept of longevity and the life of faith:
Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the life the Lord your God is giving you.” mother,
Ephesians 6:3: “So that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life
on earth.”
Deuteronomy 5:33 “Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and prosper in the land you will possess.”
Proverbs 3:1-2: “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.”
Proverbs 4:10 “Listen, my son, accept what I say, and years of your life will be many.”
Comments: A long life is associated with following God’s commandments, and you will enjoy peace, joy, and prosperity. Prosperity is not always directly exclusive to tangible assets, such as wealth. It also includes relationships, purpose, and more.
Life Cut Short”: During my long life, I have reflected many times on why some die so young, a life unfilled. Knowing God’s infinite mercy and love, I have concluded how and why many lives are shortened. Such as;
A. We are all born with free will, and often make choices and decisions that are contrary to a long life.
B. Some of us choose to live our lives enjoying the excitement of dangerous choices.
C. Genetics, somewhat predestined that some lives are shorter than others.
D. Once again, God’s love and mercy often intervene and take a young person back to Him, as only He sees the future for this individual, and He chooses to spare this person pain and sorrow that will follow his or her future on Earth.
