Faithful Stewards of the Good News
There’s been something I have been reflecting on for some time now. I felt that an online troll got me thinking about something the church needs to offer more of or get better at to help lead more souls to Christ.
While it may be wishful thinking, it can get us wondering why we hunger for Christ as he thirsts for us. Now that a new liturgical year has begun, it is time for churches to make resolutions to help Catholics grow closer to the sacraments.
Here are some suggestions
Adoration Hours
The Eucharist is present in all of the tabernacles of the world. It is time to make it more available at our churches. Some have chapels that are worthy of making this possible as long as he is not left alone.
Holy Hour
Churches need to have more Holy Hours for the intentions of the pastor. It is a time for the community to come together and pray.
It can be weekly or monthly.
More Mass Times for Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
Everyone doesn’t have off on the weekends if working at hospitals, nursing homes, fire, police, or other occupations. More Mass times would help them avoid the occasion of sin.
First Fridays and Saturdays
We need to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary now more than ever. Sometimes, they have a chance to be back-to-back each month. Eleven out of twelve months can provide that opportunity in 2026.
Social Event After Mass
The priests, along with a dedicated group of volunteers, should provide opportunities for the faithful to come together after Mass over coffee and a continental breakfast
Devoted Men
I think it goes without saying that not many men practice their faith. Yet, it can be changed. Men are called to be spiritual leaders in the household. The mother church needs men to come to her aid and lead their spouses and children to heaven.
More Confessions
While penance will be offered during extended time once in Advent and Lent, it is time to offer the sacrament of mercy more frequently after Mass or to coincide with Mass on First Friday and Saturday.
Rosary Praying Before Mass
Instead of chit-chatting, maybe it’s time for churches to embrace a prayerful atmosphere. One way to do it recite the rosary before Mass. The Knights of Columbus group can lead it, or others devoted to this practice.
More Latin
There, I said it. The church needs to embrace the beauty of Latin. Younger people want tradition. Let’s give it to them. Maybe incorporate it more during the highest Mass time on Sunday. The problem with music at Mass is that some of it is creeping closer to mainstream Protestantism, and Catholic liturgy must uphold its roots.
While some of the ideas are a bit of a stretch, I think many are doable. We need to find ways to encourage the faithful to keep coming to the sacraments and not miss out on fulfilling their obligation to attend Mass.
