Prophets: Voices of God, Bearers of Suffering
In the overwhelming, uncertain world we live in, it's hard to place all our trust in God and lay aside worries and anxieties.
To combat this fear, we turn to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
There is so much they can teach us about practicing holiness and obeying God.
One of the most powerful examples we get from the Holy Family's sanctity is how a Catholic should trust in God. Mary and Joseph both individually and together demonstrated perfect abandonment to the Lord.
Mary's fiat at the Annunciation was the pinnacle of trust.
The Angel Gabriel appeared to her with a daunting revelation: she would conceive the Son of God in her womb. Left with more questions than answers, Mary didn't resist the angel or press him for details. Instead, she surrendered to God, trusting that He was in control.
"Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to Thy Word."
She surrendered her future, reputation, and personal plans to God. Without arguing, questioning the logistics and risks, or worrying about what Joseph—or anyone else—would think, Mary trusted in God to preserve her name.
Her confidence continued at Calvary. Mary watched her beloved son suffer and die so terribly, yet she never once doubted God's plan and will.
Joseph’s trust mirrors Mary’s in its quiet strength.
Imagine being Joseph following the Annunciation: you've just had a dream informing you that your virgin betrothed is pregnant and will bear the Son of God.
Coming from anyone else, this would sound outlandish.
But Joseph knew that the revelation came from God. He embraced Jesus as his Son — an essential step to establish Jesus' lineage from King David — and protected his family with steadfast devotion.
Later, when another angel warned him to flee to Egypt, Joseph obeyed immediately.
No questions asked, he brought Mary and Jesus to safety. His trust in God outweighed every uncertainty, so he did the Lord's will, even though it meant disrupting his whole life at a moment's notice.
One of the most beautiful yet underlooked example of Mary and Joseph's trust in God happened during the Nativity.
Mary reached full term far from home, with no arrangements made for her delivery. Instead of panicking, Mary and Joseph relied completely on God’s providence.
When every inn had no room, they accepted a humble stable with gratitude. Jesus was laid in a manger, not as a sign of neglect, but as one of profound trust that God gives exactly what is needed.
Joseph surely desired better, more comfortable conditions for his wife and the newborn Christ. Yet he accepted what God provided, confident that divine providence is never lacking.
The Holy Family's example teaches us that:
Next time you feel anxious, remember Mary's fiat and Joseph's unquestioning obedience, and how God took care of them. Place your worries in God's hands.
St. Francis de Sales beautifully captures the essence of Christian trust.
“Do not fear what may happen tomorrow. The same loving Father who cares for you today will care for you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginings.” - Saint Francis de Sales
Trust and abandonment to God bring a deep peace — the peace of knowing that God is in control.
If you find yourself with anxieties or worries about the future, lay your burdens at the feet of Your Savior and pray simply, "Jesus, I trust in You."
Trust and surrender like the Holy Family, and let your soul rest in God's peace.
O Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in Thee.
