My tragedy is not your politics
Before we get started, please be sure to read my previous article; Thanking God, asking from God, and praising God, and, it's worth noting, that I have talked about Christmas fatigue before; Christmas fatigue, and, if you want to give me a very Merry Christmas, go here; Help with medical bills
So, by the time this article goes live, it will be the day before Christmas Eve.
So, Christmas Adam. (Yay)!
But, if you want me to be honest, y'all,, by the time Christmas gets here, I'm already sick of it.
I think living in a largely Protestant country like the United States is part of the problem.
Let me explain: the Puritans didn't celebrate Christmas. Christmas under the Puritans
In fact, the Puritans made it a mandatory fast day, I believe (I'm having trouble reading the article, but they most certainly didn't like Christmas) Records of the governor and company of the Massachusetts bay in New England : Printed by order of the legislature
So, when it got to the point where Christmas was reestablished, it became this single day we build up to, instead of an entire season.
And then what do we do? We forget Advent completely, because, in our minds, Christmas starts the day after Thanksgiving (the one in the US, started it after Canadian Thanksgiving would be WAY early.
So, we celebrate Christmas WAY too early, and we're afraid to even call it Christmas.
I saw a commercial, some years ago, that I believe was for iPhones (I exclusively use Android for smart phones. How do you milk a sheep? You release a new iPhone), that had SANTA CLAUS saying “Happy Holidays”.
The embodiment of Christmas himself, and they didn't even use the word Christmas!
And they'll have Christmas songs at stores, and advertise gifts for “this holiday”, which holiday?!
I understand wanting to be inclusive, but, most Americans that celebrate a major gift giving holiday in December, celebrate Christmas.
And yeah, it's a Christian holiday (sick of people claiming it's Sol Invictus or Saturnalia, there is ZERO evidence of that), but, in the United States, it's a largely secular holiday.
Yes, you need to know the true meaning of Christmas, but we needn't rush into it., A Charlie Brown Christmas: Linus Explains the True Meaning Of Christmas.
And since we do rush into it, it seems rather lazy, rather inexcusable, that we don't even call Christmas by its name.
So, what is the problem with the phrase “Happy Holidays”?
It's banal.
It's boring.
It's corporate.
It's fake.
Some of my mom's family is Jewish, so, I do celebrate Hanukkah for heritage reasons.
But, even if I didn't, and you told me “Happy Hanukkah”, I wouldn't be offended.
To wrap this up like a Christmas present, I'm reminded of the story of a priest who wished a Jewish man a “Merry Christmas”. And then apologized for it.
The Jewish man said to the priest, “why wouldn't you want me to have a Merry Christmas, Father:?
I might be fatigued by the time Christmas gets here, but, have a Merry Christmas y'all.
