Joseph's Charge
Along the road to Bethlehem,
The ancient town, the house of bread.
A star appears, a diadem,
To hover now above my head.
The virgin lo, her time arrives,
When holy child in time is born.
The one to save our broken lives,
And usher in eternal morn.
Who am I that I should care for this the perfect son,
I am silent as I search for sheltered rest.
Why should God my Father charge me with his holy one,
What an honor now that I should be so blest.
Joseph, son of David rise from sleep and tremble not with fear,
Take the baby and his mother in your care.
He will save his people from their death by this his advent here.
Son of man the light from light the holy heir.
Holy carpenter now teach the child to build a world in love,
Share your gifts and skill, protect him as he grows.
He the Savior true, to build his kingdom, fashioned from above.
Here to save us and to vanquish all his foes.
The fullness comes, the child is born,
And sleeps on manger throne.
His cries are like the rose’s thorn,
Such sorrow men have known.
The angels sing, the shepherds kneel,
The night is bright and still.
A son to grow, to teach and heal,
To live the Father’s will.
I cannot speak, the hour profound,
The Savior King, by God is crowned.
To God the son I yield my will,
On this the holy night so still.
Lord, may I always worthy be,
To guard this holy family.
And may I seek with silent praise,
To love them all these wondrous days.
Along redemption’s narrow way,
May I, your servant, walk with grace.
And seek with all I do and say,
To love the one who saves our race.

Son of man the light from light the holy heir.
Holy carpenter now teach the child to build a world in love,
Share your gifts and skill, protect him as he grows.
He the Savior true, to build his kingdom, fashioned from above.
Here to save us and to vanquish all his foes.
