Father David Nix correctly distinguishes between tithing and almsgiving (i.e., "by classic definitions, a tithe can technically only go to priests or religious or a Church.")...In his provocative article, he asks Must Catholics Tithe a Full 10%? Father Nix says we MUST give even more, and reminds us that charitable giving does not count toward tithing!
Father Nix indicates how we seem to be in a quagmire. Thirty years ago, I may have quickly discounted some of what he says:
"I will not give a single penny to the USCCB to their involvement with Catholic Charities or the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) or even Catholic Relief Services (CRS) that has supported contraception. Under Biden, Catholic Charities received billions of dollars for trafficking children....
"
LifeSite News reported: 'Chinese dissident Guo Wengui claims that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) "allocates up to $2 billion a year" to buy the Vatican's silence concerning the ongoing persecution of the Catholic Church in China and other human rights abuses'.... the CCP is
still choosing the communist bishops while the good bishops literally go homeless in China....
[The 990 is an IRS form on which non profits report their highest compensated people.] I recently saw the 990 for a Catholic pro-life superstar who took home a yearly salary of $388,000
Father Nix reminds us that our diocese "taxes" your donations, so that
"some of your money goes to the bishop and some of that money goes to the USCCB and some of that money goes to CRS (which brings contraception across the globe) and CCHD (which is pro-LGBT) and Catholic Charities (which is pro-trafficking.)
While Father Nix views our bishops and the Vatican as corrupt, we cannot get out of our tithing obligation with simply more almsgiving!
I urge everyone to read
Must Catholics Tithe a Full 10% and explore the legitimacy of Father Nix's ideas. Are there legitimate ways out of the quagmire?
