Would you be willing to be a Martyr?
What does your roadmap look like? Is it leading you to your destination, or farther and farther away? Is the road you're on smooth and without terrain? Or is it hilly and steep with lots of detours? The latter, is a good sign. It means you're crossing over to where the road is visibly leading you to God. Those detours are for our own good when we start straying from the path we are on. The other road means you still have a lot of lessons to learn. Lessons of discernment and trust. The rough hills, sometimes mountains to cross, teach us patience and surrender.
We have a personal tour guide and driver named "Jesus.". Sometimes, we tend to take the wheel and we steer ourselves right into dead ends. Without help and alone on that road, we stop, get out and stand by the road with our finger out waiting for a ride. A lonely hitchhiker. As we look around at the foreign country we have driven ourselves to, we keep walking, until we ask for direction and get back on track. We forgot to look at our road map. Our shortcuts don't get us very far when we don't let our tour guide drive. His way is a safer way that might take a little longer. But in our haste, we drive our own way, and eventually, run out of gas.
Each of us has our own "road map". If we decide to be the driver, then you must expect to have big bumps in the road and often travel off the path. But if we allow our Jesus to be the driver, our tour guide, then the road won't be as bumpy and will surely lead us to wear the streets are paved with gold and safely to our destination.
