RIP: Russell Shaw (updated)

Though Russell Shaw was one of my favorite Catholic authors, I feel at a loss to ecplain why I thought he was so great. I once called into a radio show on which he was a guest and had the opportunity to tell him that I was a big fan. He struck me as truly modest and humble.

Russell Shaw had a handle on.the vocation to holiness which we all share. He did NOT pretend an appreciation for the lay APOSTOLATE. He correctly distinguished between MINISTRIES and APOSTOLATES. That alone was a major gift to our time.
