An overlooked passage on baptismal regeneration and infant baptism
Before we get started, please be sure to read my previous article, As I have said before, repeated prayers are fine, my latest on Locals; Lumbee federal recognition and why it's about time
Oh, and, I wrote a book, get it here; Elisabeth and the other man (ebook) and here, Elisabeth and the other man (paperback)
So, because it's an easy Psalm to remember (Psalm 123), and it really does show the importance of petitioning God and who we are in his sight, let's get into it.
“To you I lift up my eyes,
O you, who are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of the servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of the maidservant to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till he has mercy upon us.
Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.
Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud”.
Y'all know that I grew up poor (Life in poverty), so, I don't have respect for a lot of things, like scams that sell you bleach water, I talk about that a little bit, here;Thank you!
But, there's this bit of hot rubbish on the interwebs.
“Women are attracted to charisma”.
Nope, they're not, they're not even attracted to confidence. When I'm trying to find a wife, and it backfires, because y'all mistake being cocky for being confident, that's kind of the opposite of what the women respect.
Oh, and let's get this out of the way “rizz” sounds stupid. That doesn't sound like the word “charisma”. Like, at all.
Dang kids. Get off my lawn!
But, so where does this leave us? You know, I never understood why some Christians have a problem calling Christianity a religion (newsflash, it IS a religion, Yes, Christianity is a religion)
And, I think this Psalm is ultimately about religious duty.
I really want to focus on two places in particular,
“Behold, as the eyes of the servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of the maidservant to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till he has mercy upon us.” This is v. 2, if you're curious).
Well, the fact of the matter is, God is our master. But, I don't mean this in the Muslim sense where we don't recognize God as a Father (even the Old Testament calls God a Father, multiple places, it's not as prominent as in the New Testament, but, it is there (Psalm 89:26, for instance).but, more importantly, God is Our Father.
And, why does a child serve his father? Because he wants to please his father. It's not that he wants to earn his father's love, his father's love is unconditional, it's that he wants to show his father he loves him.
And, as someone whose father died when I was a child (Thank you, Dad), I still hope everything I do pleases my dad.
Death is not the end. Remember that.
God is Our Father.
He loves you.
Make sure you love him.
