An Advent reflection
Before we get started, please read my previous article here; Simon Magnus and the problem of fraud, my latest Locals episode here; Happy Birthday Dad, rest in peace
And, hey, remember how I wrote a book? Elisabeth and the other man (ebook), Elisabeth and the other man (paperback)
One of the things I've noticed is how, people will claim to be against Zionism, and say they don't have a problem with Jewish people...only to claim that “Zionists” run the world (there are more Muslims than Jews, yet, I don't usually hear the claim Muslims rule the world, and, FYI, a lot of the claims Jews run the world, are popular in Muslim countries, here's one; Iranian crowds chant ‘Death to America, Israel’ during funeral for top commanders, scientists killed in Israeli strikes and another, With chants of ‘Death to America, Israel,’ Iran holds state funeral for leaders slain in war)
Now, I'm not arguing against the Nation State of Israel (for the record, I am both a Christian, as in a practicing Catholic, and a Zionist, as in someone that supports a Jewish homeland, but not theologically a Christian Zionist, I'm a Christian and a Zionist, but, not a Christian Zionist).
Why does this matter?
Because, sadly, a lot of Christians have decided that Our Lord's people (my boss is a Jewish carpenter), shouldn't inhabit the place their families have been living for millennia.
So, there's a bit of an historical myth that Jews were all kicked out of the Holy Land, and that modern Israel is a European colony, which is nonsense, given that the largest group of Jews in Israel is of Middle Eastern and North African descent;Who are Mizrahi Jews: The Indigenous Jewish Communities of the Middle East That Shape Israel Today.
There's also the fact that St. Jerome consulted Jews in Palestine (I'm using this as a geographical term, not a political one), to help with his Vulgate translation of the Bible. (St. Jerome, by the way, as far as we know, he was the first person to call the Deuterocanon “Apocrypha”, he was WRONG, but, the reformers grabbed hold of that).
But, wait a minute...didn't the Jews leave the Holy Land after the Destruction of the temple in 70 AD?
Some did, but, it doesn't logically follow that all did.
So, what do I want to get into?
First things first, I do NOT subscribe to the two covenant theory. Anyone who makes it to heaven is saved through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, even if he doesn't know it.
And, I think we need to go to scripture to expound my own beliefs,
Let's start with the fact that Paul explicitly calls himself an Israelite,
“I ask then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. “ (Romans 11:1-2).
By the way, I want to type more, but, I'm kind of funny about using long text in copyrighted Bibles.
Anyway, you'll note that Paul was already a Christian at this point. This is important, because you can't change you ethnicity. Anyway, I'll share a link to Romans 11 so y'all cam read this in context.
But, really, I want to focus on this
“Lest you be wise in your won conceits, I want you to understand this mystery, brethren; a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles come on, and so all Israel will be saved; as it is written,
“The deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish the ungodliness from Jacob”;
“and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins”. (Romans 11:25-27).
And, well, something that seems like a gut punch to the Jewish people then follows, but, again, read IN CONTEXT.
“As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but, as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers”. (Romans 11:28). Sounds bad had first, but, it tells you something very important, God loves the Jewish people.
In fact, read the next verse,
“For the gifts and call are irrevocable”.
The Jews don't just stop being God's chosen people.
Anyway, here's where the “I don't like quoting long text from copyrighted Bibles comes in”,
I can't share it in its entirety on here, but in the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, there is a study on the Salvation of All Israel, and it does say that only the grace of Jesus Christ saves, and, it even gives verses to read (Romans 10:14-17).
This is good then, that this is from BEFORE Romans 11, because it gives the sense of thought.
So, to recap, the Jews are still God's chosen people, Christians can be Zionists, politically, without being Christian Zionists, religiously, Can Catholics be Zionists?
Y'all, don't 1) Be anti-Semites, and, 2) Try to claim you're Anti-Zionist only to go on with an Anti-Semitic trope about Jewish bankers and how Jews allegedly control the world.
No dude, you're an Anti-Semite.
