Beloved Padre Pio
They were Christian Martyrs who in the days of Roman dominance were cruelly imprisoned and who suffered physically due to the heat and rough prison guards. Felicity was 8 months pregnant and Perpetua was a noble woman, nursing her infant. Felicity had her baby while in prison. They were tortured to no end and then being thrown into the arena for all pagan Romans to watch, they succumbed to everlasting Glory. Felicity, by a wild beast, and Perpetua slain by a gladiator. Felicity's baby was adopted by a fellow Christian. Both were ultimately killed by the sword, with Perpetua famously guiding the hesitant gladiators blade to her throat. Their Faith was so striking that it converted their prison warden. Their names are also remembered in the "Roman Cannon of the Mass".
Their feast day is March 7th, as they were both martyred on this day, in 203 A.D.
These two beautiful Saints are remembered for their faces of joy in the midst of cruel Martyrdom.
Perpetua's last words saying, "stand fast in Faith and Love one another and do not let our sufferings be a stumbling block to you". Saying these words to the people who were watching them die. May her words ring out to all of us and to the atmosphere for all of us to hear and use as our pledge to the God who is our Creator and our Father.
Saints Perpetua and Felicity, pray for us!
