The Scars of Aimee Haynes Now Available
So much took place in the three years of Jesus ministry. He overcame temptations in the desert, found eleven faithful men and 72 disciples to learn about his mission to bring God’s kingdom on earth. In a few dioceses across the United States, the 40th Day of Easter is observed as a Holy Day of Obligation.
As recorded, Christ’s first words to those who sought him were “Come, follow me”. When they did, they went on an unexpected journey that changed the trajectory of their lives. They left behind many possessions, their families, and even risked their lives for him.
These apostles and disciples witnessed Christ welcoming sinners, fulfilling the many ancient prophecies, and laying down his life for the salvation of humanity.
When he conquered death, he appeared to them. As Jesus gathered his apostles, his last words were “Go”. He didn’t mean for them to “go away”. Rather, it was a command to go and make disciples. St. Augustine reflected on the Ascension to tell us, “For although He ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in Him by grace".
St. Thomas Aquinas reminds us, “But Christ's Ascension into heaven, whereby He withdrew His bodily presence from us, was more profitable for us than his bodily presence would have been. First of all, in order to increase our faith, which is of things unseen.... Secondly, to uplift our hope.”
Both doctors remind us that we, too, will ascend with God on our final day. All it takes is for us to strive for what is above, heaven.
Let’s go forth and preach the gospel as we are reminded after Mass every Sunday. Strive to make apostles for all nations. Bring about God‘s kingdom on earth now
