Before we get started, please be sure to read my previous article, here; So, what's the deal with the the dead coming out of their graves in the Gospel of Matthew?, check out my latest on Locals; Insurance, weight lies, and BMIs, and, hey, remember, I wrote a book; and you can find out more about that, here and here.
I have decided I want to do a study on Hebrews. Now, I don't know how much I've talked about Hebrews, but, I have been reading it a lot over the last few days.
Some preliminary notes; one, I am a Catholic, and write with a Catholic bias, there is going to be a reason for this that will be made clear. Two, As June is men's mental health month, I largely want to take June to discuss that topic And, three, I will be using the Douay Rheims version, so, your versification may vary.
With that out of the way.
“God, who at sundry times and divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, in these days hath spoken to us by his Son, whom also he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom he also made the world.
Who being the brightness of his glory , and the figure of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right of the majesty on high. Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they,
For to which of the angels had he said at any time, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith: And let all the angels of God adore him, and to the angels indeed he saith: He that maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But to the Son: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved just, and hated iniquity; therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And: Thou in the beginning. O Lord, dist found the earth; and the works of thy hands are the heavens. They shall perish, but thou shalt continue: and they shall grow as old as a garment. And as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed; but thou art the selfsame, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the angels said he at any time; Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies a footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for them who shall receive the inheritance of salvation? (Hebrews 1:1-14).
Okay, since my hand hurts from typing, I want to hit a few key points. My study of Hebrews is no exhaustive, but, I want to go through the whole book. But, let's look at this one “For to which of the angels had he said at any time, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee?”. (Hebrews 1:5)
Keep that in your arsenal, because Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel (yet...also that he's human, if I understand JW theology, I'd be able to write more coherently).
What's also really interesting is the next verse; “ And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith: And let all the angels of God adore him”, why would God's angels give divine honours to a high ranking angel? (Revelation 19:9-10 says to NOT DO THAT).
But, to wrap up this Bible study, let's go to verse 13,
“But to which of the angels said he at any time; Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies a footstool? “ Okay, so, what is God's footstool? Well, earth (Isiah 66:1), but what is Hebrews 1:13 referring to? Psalm 110:1 (which has a different numbering in the Douay Rheims, so, I'm not going to look it up, because that always throws me off). So, here's a Bible with the versification you're probably used to. Psalm 110 (RSVCE)
Jesus is, 1) God (he's worshiped with divine honours), 2) of the Davidic line, and, 3) Jesus would have to be divine, according to the author of Hebrews. Let's look very closely at v. 2, we'll include verse 1 because it gives the context;
“God, who at sundry times and divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, in these days hath spoken to us by his Son, whom also he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom he also made the world.” It looks like, the Son was somehow created in the creation of the world. That's a divine attribute.
