Faith Dynamics Explored in Latest Star Wars Blockbuster

Lovers of the Mandalorian series were in for an action-packed treat from the latest in the saga. The popular series became a stand-alone film for fans to experience, as we continue to be taken to a galaxy far, far away

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film follows Mando and Grogu traveling the galaxy and helping the New Republic. After a messy mission on Hoth, Mando and Grogu are given a mission to rescue Rotta the Hutt (son of Jabba from the original trilogy).

The film continues to be true to the original storytelling with some new fun characters and worthwhile action scenes.

Like many Star Wars films, it touches on some themes of faith.

FATHER/SON ARCS

The film focused on two arcs. The first is our favorite duo, Grogu and Mando. Mando shifts from a life of solitary survival to one of total self-sacrifice to protect Grogu. This mirrors the overarching theme of a Father figure fiercely protecting and redeeming those who are vulnerable, much like the biblical themes of rescue and adoption.  This has been the premise of the series and film.

The second arc is that of Jabba and Rotta the Hutts. Fans of the Star Wars phenomenon may remember Jabba the Hutt, the notorious gangster, who controlled Tatooine.  Rotta wanted to distance himself from his father’s shadow. He even distrusted his relatives who looked over him after his father's death. 

MUTUAL DEPENDENCE

After being severely injured and almost dying, Grogu would step up and save his life. A line that stood out from the film took place before the duo completed their epic mission. Mando told Grogu, “The old look after the young. The young look after the old. This is the way."

INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP

Grogu came a long way from the series and the stand-alone film. He goes from an immature child to one who actively uses the force.

This echoes a spiritual mentorship of St. Paul and St. Timothy. It is also relevant to other holy examples of discipleship among many saints throughout the history of the Catholic Church.

Mando provided the training, discipline, and security. This demonstrates how the faith is passed on.

Overall, this anticipated film was fun to watch. It continues to remain true to its character. It also stayed true to the original Star Wars storylines.

This deserves a four and a half out of five.
